Page 60 G o l d c o r p a n d I B M I m p r o v e M i n e r a l E x p l o r a t i o n Page 60 By Frank Giorno Goldcorp and IBM teamed up to cre ate a tec hnology that will increase the accuracy of interpreting mining ex ploration data leading to better deci sion making The program known as IBM Explo ration with W atson engages spatial analytics machine learning and pre dictive models helping geologists identify the key areas of mineraliza tion This saves time and costs as well as helps secure investments to move new mining projects forward The solution applies artifcia l intelli gence to predict the potential for gold mineralization and uses powerful search and query capabilities across a range of exploration datasets The potential to radically accelerate exploration tar get identifcati on com bined with signifcantly improved hit rates on economic mineraliza tion has the potential to drive a stepchange in the pace of value growth in the in dustry said T odd White Executive V ice President and Chief Operating Ofcer Goldcorp At Red Lake IBM Exploration with W atson provided independent support to drill tar gets planned by geologists via traditional methods and proposed new tar gets which were subsequently verifed The drilling of some of these new tar gets is ongoing with the frst tar get yielding the predicted mineral ization at the expected depth T imelines are short in mining and exploration I am excited to see the improvements we can make with the data platform and gold mineraliza tion predictions said Maura Kolb Goldcorp s Exploration Manager at Red Lake Gold Mines These tools can help us view data in totally new ways W e have already begun to test the W atson tar gets from the predictive model through drilling and results have been impressive so far The IBM W atson initiative recently earned Goldcorp a prestigio us Inge nious A ward in the lar ge private sec tor category from the Information T echnology Association of Canada IT AC The IT AC award for Gold corp s Cogniti ve Journey recognizes excellence in the use of information and communic ations techno logy by or ganizations to solve problems im prove performance introduce new services and grow business Applying the power of IBM W atson to these unique challenges diferenti ates us in the natural resources indus try said Mark Fawcett Partner with IBM Canada W e are using acceler ated computing power for complex geospatial queries that can harmonize geological data from an entire site on a single platform This is the frst time this solution has been ever used which makes this project more signif cant Goldcorp will put the new technology to work on additional tar gets in 2019 During the three months ending Sep tember 30 2018 Red Lake generated 64 million US in revenue while producing 64000 oz of gold Over the frst nine months of 2018 209 million in revenue was generated from 189000 oz Ore from Red Lake Gold Mines is hoisted up either the Balmer or Campbell shafts then processed at the Campbell mill using a conventional crushing and grinding circuit com bined with a gravity concentr ation for freemilling gold or carboninpulp for refractory gold Gold recoveries average 94 The milling capacity at the Camp bell mil l is 3100 tonnes per day The amount of gold expected to be pro duced was 235000 ounces for 2018 The future for mining with the use of IBM Exploration with W atson looks promising The gold reserves in the proven and probable category stands at 217 million oz The measured and indicated reserves are 273 million ounces The inferred reserves amount totals 435 million ounces The fg ures for Red Lakes gold reserves also includes information from Cochenour and HG Y oung locations The application of IBM Exploration with W atson to Red Lake s data base gathered from its exploration program may lea d to better defnition of future gold reserves Red Lake s most advanced explora tion tar get is HG Y oung locat ed about 15 kilometres northwest of the Red Lake complex Still in the concept phase the focus at HG Y oung is on building a geological model that will lay the foundation for a prefeasibil ity study During the third quarter of 2017 a positive tradeof study was completed Goldcorp expects HG Y oung to become an integra l part of the Red Lake district in the future
