56 56 Page 56 Noront Resources Ltd has narrowed the choices for its proposed ferro chrome production facility FPF to two Northern Ontario cities T immins or Sault Ste Marie Four communities participated in the bidding process which began in Feb ruary 2018 Both Thunder Bay and Sudbury have been removed from further consider ation All submissions were evaluated based on a comprehe nsive set of criteria de termined by Noront and the engineer ing frm Hatch which was hired to help in the evaluation process Criti cal factors included environmental and site suitability capital costs op erating costs and an assessment of community acceptance of hosting the facility The quality of the submissions was outstanding and demonstrated a sig nifcant efort by each of the commu nities involved said Noront Presi dent and CEO Alan Coutts They each provided a compelling case that illustrated the merits of their location as a host for the ferrochrome production facility The Sault is promoting a heavy indus trial 400acre brownfeld site located west of Essar Steel Algoma which has Great Lakes port access T immins meanwhile has been touting the former Kidd Metallur gical Site that is fully serviced There is also a very experienced and knowledgeable work force and supportive commu nity The next and fnal phase of the site selection process is now underway It includes substantial negotiation of commercial use terms with the own ers of the two favoured sites Noront expects this stage of defnitio n to be concluded in the fourth quarter of 2018 shortlisted for Nor ont Resour ces land and a reserve The negotiated land agreement with Canada provides Missanabie Cree First Nation reserve status over 3900 hectares of their ancestral lands and includes entitlement to mining and mineral rights that will provide great er economic opportunities for the community The lands are in the Dog Lake area east of W awa and west of Chapleau an area that has become a focus of gold exploration activities It s also close to the goldmini ng camp near Debreuilville Ontario which has several operating mines in the area in cluding the Island Gold mine recent ly purchased by Alamos Gold from Richmont Gold and Magino Gold Mine being developed by Ar gonaut Gold Along with the establishmen t of its landbase the Missanabie Cree First Nation also signed a partnership agreement with
