Page 88 Missanabie Cree First Nation is on a mission to build its community that only recently received land to form its reserve on lands Northeast of W awa and Northwest of Chap leau The First Nation s traditional lands are located about 400 kilometers north of Sault Ste Marie In 1906 under the terms of T reaty 9 the Crown promised to set apart reserves for each band based on one square mile of reserve land per family of fve or 128 acres per person Since 1906 there have never been any lands set apart for the use and beneft of the Missanabie Cree and as a result the First Na tion sufered With no land base and their traditional livelihood of hunting and fshing undermined with the creation of the Chapleau Game Preserve the people began to leave the Missanabie area in search of economic opportunities to support their families A federal Order in Council signed on June 22 2018 created the land base for Missanabie Cree First Na tion under Canada s Additions to ReservesNew Reserves Policy The land agreement negotiated be Missanabie Cree First Nation developes community through Joint V enture Agreements By Frank Giorno COME VISIT THE FIRST NA TIONS P ARTNERSHIP P A VILION Meet our partners and view the world class products and services they provide V isit canadianminingexpocom for your free pass Page 86
