Page 8 MINING The City s economic state is heavily infuenced by the mining industry The mining sector directly employs 104 of the work force in T immins Further T immins economy is stabilized by the diversity of minerals available in the community and region Xstrata Copper s Kid Creek Mine is not only the deepest basemetal mine in the world but it is also home to the oldest water ever discovered It continued to make T immins a great place to work and to live by bringing home the John T Ryan National Safety T rophy while also investing 36 million in environment improvements as part of its zeroharm philosophy Goldcorp s Porcupine Gold Mines Dome Mine holds the distinction of being the oldest continuously running gold mine in North America In order to continue their success Goldcorp will be investing 13 million into exploration at their T immins properties The Hollinger Open Pit is scheduled to begin production in 2013 and once this project is in full swing an additional 130 people will be employed at Goldcorp Lake Shore Gold Corp brought its Bell Creek Mine their second mine in the City of T immins into production in 2012 Lake Shore also plans a 50 mill expansion to 3000 tonnes per day that is expected to be completed by mid2013 Detour Gold Corporation s Detour Lake Gold Mine located 185 kilometers north of Cochrane is set to become Canada s largest operating gold mine once it begins production in 2013 RET AIL The retail sector is a vital part of the economy in T immins as it employs nearly 3300 people or 14 of the work force The W est End of T immins is anchored by large retail outlets Canadian T ire Home Deport W alMart Home Hardware and also features the T immins Square the largest shopping mall in Northeastern Ontario Brenda McLeish Property Manager at the T immins Square noted that the mall sees an average of 100000 visitors a week during peak periods She added that fve new tenants are occupying space at the mall They are The Handmaiden Call It Spring Charm Diamonds T ip T op T ailors and Urban Planet Urban Planet will be occupying 45000 square feet where Zellers the previous tenant were located T immins Square Sales Growth 2010 683 201 1 685 2012 160 2013 25 Source Brenda McLeish February 2014 Downtown T immins which includes fnancial services professional offces and restaurants to go along with retail outlets provides employment to over 3000 people and sees 20000 vehicles a day New for 2012 was the Urban Park and the Urban Park Market A section of Third A venue between Spruce and Cedar Streets is closed of f to traffc to allow retailers and local organizations bring their goods and services onto the street One of the main attractions is the Urban Park Market where local and regional farmers and bakers can sell their goods directly to the public The Urban Park has expanded and will continue for 2013
