Much of the or e and metal we mine ar ound the world eventually comes to Nikkelverk – our low-cost, high-r ecovery r efnery and sulphuric acid plant located in the port city of Kristiansand, Norway . The primary metals r efned at Nikkelverk include nickel, copper , cobalt and pr ecious metals. Our plant is a testament to sustainable and r esponsible development: it ranks among the most cost-effcient nickel r efneries in the wester n world, is ISO 9001 quality , ISO 14001 envir onment-certifed, and OHSAS 18001 health and safety-certifed. W e ar e also one of the lar gest employers in souther n Norway and an important part of the local economy . Operations Nikkelverk opened in 1910 as Kristiansands Nikkelraffneringsverk AS and was acquir ed by Falconbridge in 1929 and then by Xstrata in 2006. Since then, we have made many impr ovements and advancements to the plant. The Nikkelverk r efnery has the capacity to annually pr ocess 92,000 tonnes of nickel, 36,000 tonnes of copper cathodes, and 3,000 tonnes of cobalt. W e also tr eat the silver , gold and pr ecious metals that get extracted with our Xstrata Sudbury and Raglan feeds, as well as metals fr om other sour ces. Our primary operations ar e focused on pr ocessing the granulated matte, much of which is fr om the Sudbury Smelter , by crushing it into a very fne powder . Our Nikkelverk r efnery then uses a cost-effcient chlorine leach and electr owinning pr ocess to separate and r ecover component metals. This effciency cr eates r oom for gr eater fexibility in sour cing and tr eating concentrates, allowing us to get the best r esults without additional waste. The metals ar e then separated and distributed for further purifcation and r efning. Fr om ther e, the pr oducts ar e cut, packaged and shipped to world markets. W e pr oduce a high-grade purity nickel in the for m of cathode and cr own pr oducts. These ar e typically used in high nickel alloys, superalloys, low alloy steel, foundry , electr oplating, and electr ofor ming which all eventually become a part of pr oducts – fr om electr onics to automobiles to building material – that get used by millions of people ar ound the world. Employees The r efnery employs appr oximately 500 people. 2011 Pr oduction Rates • 92,427 tonnes nickel metal • 36,292 tonnes copper metal • 3,067 tonnes cobalt metal
