ested him since childhood Lind say went to a few sessions and he was hooked Mine Rescue ofers a diferent perspective on mining that are of interest to me from an engineering perspective Lindsay explains How do you make things work when things go wrong When you go underground you can see what could be done to improve mine rescue and mine safety Lindsay says During the training sessions we refect on the rescue exercises from an engin eering point of view and think of the changes that could be made to mitigate or prevent an accident or emergency from oc curring Lindsay says As part of his coop placement Jared is developing a training package for the engineering and geology departments containing procedures for dealing with an emergency Laurentian University Rescue Club members get an opportunity to put what they learned about mine res cue into practice by competing in mine rescue competitions In February 2019 Jared Lindsay and the Laurentian University team competed in the Colorado School of Mines Intercollegiate Mines Emergency Respon se De velopment Competition in Idaho Springs Colorado The competition consists of mock disasters that are created in an un derground mine to train collegiate mine rescue teams in a realistic emergency search and rescue setting It included a feld competi tion where teams had to put out an actual underground fre a techni cian test and a frst aid test The LUMR team won the under ground mine rescue portion of Page 74 By Frank Giorno Laurentian University Mine Res cue Club is a student run organi zation whose aim is to introduce mining engin eering students and earth science students to a very important part of a mining opera tion resecue and mine safety Through a partnership with Ontar io Mine Rescue OMR members of LUMRC receive basic mine res cue training to raise safety aware ness in engineering students en tering the mining industry Jared Lindsa y is a 2nd year stu dent at the Bharti School of En gineering at Laurentian U He is the president of the LUMRC and is currently working at Glencore s Nickel Rim site as part of his 16month coop placement When Jared got to Laurentian U he heard about the LUMRC and saw that it contained alot of ele ments of frefghting that has inter Laurentian University The Mine Rescue Club
