Page 54 Adam Schraeder is the cap tain of the KS W indsor Salt Ojibway Mine Rescue T eam that won the Ontario Pro vincial Mine Rescue Compe tition in June 2019 at Red Lake Ontario Adam was introduced to mine res cue when he frst started working at Windsor Salt s Ojibway Mine in Windsor Ontario When I frst joined Windsor Salt our safety manager asked if I was interested in being involv ed with mine rescue Adam recalls I thought I would give it a try Ontario health and safety laws require a ratio of one trained in dividual available for each of fve underground employees There are 26 mine rescuers at the Wind sor Salt Ojibway Mine Like other physically demanding activities there are requirements that need to be met before mak ing it to the KS Windsor Salt mine rescue this applies to all mine res cue teams in the province There are four criteria used for selection of personnel Common core training underground medi cal requirem ents physical re quirements assurance of qualif cations After meeting these criteria any one wanting to join the team must complete an advanced First Aid CPR course for three days and then a fveday 40hour basic in troductory training course from Ontario Mine Rescue At our facility we have a competi tion for any volunteer who is inter ested in bein g on our competitive team It involves a theory and a practical test that all members of the team must complete in order to secure a position on the team A standard competition mine res cue team consists of fve people Captain 1 2 3 4 V ice Captain and 5 In competitions we also have a 6 who is basically a spare and must be able to fll in for anyone on the team or com plete a separate problem on their own Communications is a crucial part of mine rescue The rescue team is in constant contact witht the briefng ofcer on the surface ex plains Schraeder They remain on the surface and help navigate and guide us through the situation while they have direct contact with the Con trol Group Incident Command who is overseeing the emergency As a Captain I am the leader of the team whether in a training scenario or in a reallife situation Schraeder adds The Ontario Mine Rescue program sets out protocols and priorities when a team is deployed for any emergency and when working in dangerous situations safety of the team always comes frst It is my responsibility to ensure Says Captain of the KS W indsor Salt Mine Rescue Key to Mine Rescue is T rust By Frank Giorno Page 52
