Page 52 Contd on pg 49 KS W indsor Salt Ojibway Mine WINNERS 70th Anniversary Ontario Mine Rescue Competition Page 50 By Frank Giorno The 70th anniversary edition of the Ontario Mine Rescue com petition was held in Red Lake the frst week of June 2019 with the mine rescue volunteers from KS Windsor Salt Ojibway Mine fnish ing frst overall and earning the right to wear the champion s gold hard hats It was the frst time KS Windsor Ojibway Mine has come out on top at the Provincial Mine Rescue Competition In May 2019 the Windsor Ontar iobased team won the Southern District rescue competition in Goderich Ontario The Provincial Mine Rescue com petitions were organized to apply provincewide standards in mine rescue techniques The frst ever Ontario Provincial Mine Rescue competition was at the Pamour Porcupine Gold Mines from T im mins in 1950 During the competitions the eight mine rescue teams that won their district competitions were as signed simulated mine rescue scenarios in a portion of Newmont Goldcorp s Red Lake mine The teams were evaluated on their knowledge frefghting skills frst aid response care and use of emergency equipment and their ability to appl y their knowl edge to solving the simulated emergency The provincial mine rescue com petitions feature the mine rescue teams technicians and theory exam winners from the eight dis trict competitions that were held across Ontario in May 2019 The weeklo ng competition was organized by Ontario Mine Rescue OMR a part of W orkplace Safety North and hosted by Newmont Goldcorp Red Lake Gold Mines from June 47 2019 Major sponsors of the Provincial Mine Rescue Competition s were Drager Safety and Newmo nt Gold corp The KS Windsor Salt mine res cue team consisted of Captain Adam Schraeder 2 Al Gernon 3 Dillon Perry 4 Joe Schraeder V icecaptain Phillip Schraeder 6 Ethan Kirby 7 Mike Y ott Briefng Ofcer Matt Stefanic T eam Co ordinator Jeremy Bondy and team Manager Giovanni Grande KS Windsor Salt Ojibway Mine was also awarded the John Guth rie Special Equipment A ward during the closing banquet on Fri day June 7 The mine rescuers from Newmont Goldcorp s Porcupine Gold Mines fnished in second place Porcu pine Gold Mines won the T immins District mine rescue competition held in May in T immins Ontario In addition Porcupine Gold Mines also won the T eam Firefghting A ward Meanwhile the Newmon t Gold corp Musselwhite mine rescuers won the Theory Exam A ward JeanY ves Doiron a mine rescue technician with V ale Canada in Sudbury won the award for top technician Doiron won techni cian competition for the Sudbury District competition in May Norma Gannon Jr of Kirkland Lake Gold Macassa Mine fnished second Steeve Pinel of Alamos Gold Is land Mine fnished third
