Page 15 was equipped with everything recommended by the Godson Commission includ ing breathing apparatus to enable rescuers to battle underground fres The mine rescue stations would provide training and support to all the mine rescue teams for each operat ing underground mines All Ontario underground mines were to have equip ment for detecting toxic chemicals and for successfully undertaking rescue operati ons It was the responsibil ity of the mine rescue station to train men in carrying out rescue operations and maintain rescue equipment T rainin g was to be standardized so that each mine rescuer received the same training and could respond to any emergency In 1930 the frst Ontario Mine Rescue Manual was produced and distributed to mine rescue teams T o day the Ontario Mine Rescue Manual is available on line through W orkplace Safety North The lessons learned from the Godson Commission are things that many miners take for granted today The Hollinger disaster high lighted the need for serious safety changes in mining in Ontario The recommen dations in the Royal Commission into the Hollinger Fire provided that basis for improved safety and re sponse to mining emergencies Page 13
