Page 32 Council Appr oves Pr oposal to Mine and Restor e Lands for Public Use Hollinger Mine Pr oject Contd on pg 33 By Frank Giorno Porcupine Gold Mines PGM a sub sidiary of Goldcorp Inc received unanimous support from T immins City Council for reopening mining operations at the Hollinger Mine site just east of downtown T immins ulti mately rehabilitating the site and re turning it to public use after it closes Council s vote accepted the Site Plan Control Agreement with PGM as the outline governing how the Hollinger Open Pit mine operates and how it would mitigate the concerns of near by residents and businesses In summarizing the importance of ac cepting the PGM s plans Mayor T om Laughren said I am a big supporter of this proj ect This council has done its due diligence W e have had 32 engineer ing reports 40 plus public meetings countless emails third party reviews council meetings and the input of the Hollinger Public Advisory Commit tee Goldcorp is one of the few compa nies I want to walk down this process this project It s something this com munity will have and be proud of Laughren concluded Councillor Pat Bamford pointed to generated for T immins There is an economic momentum that comes from spending half a bil lion dollars over eight years and with a multiplier ef fect of three four or even 10 times T immins will receive up to 5 billion of economic momen tum Councillor Bamford said I can t help but believe that with the economic momentum from the proj ect that there will be a positive ef fect on property values in T immins includ ing those on the periphery of the mine site Bamford explained addressing the concern residents had over pos sible loss of property value Council members also were relieved that PGM will provide a 10 million letter of credit to protect the city from potential lawsuits Beyond that PGM will remain liable for claims arising from mining related issues once the site is closed Councillor Noella Rinaldo who sup
