The trio got their names written in the legal history books for selling the W indfall claims to V iola MacMillan. The claims turned out to be worth - less but the stock ran to over $5 from less than 50 cents on rumours. No one went to jail but Ontario’ s secu - rity laws were changed as a result of a Royal Commission that looked into those hectic days. The trio worked together through 1964 and 1965. They wheeled and dealt from Suite 358 in the Empire Hotel that was never locked for 18 months. Larche was born on July 8th, 1928 in Blind River and came to T immins in 1932 with his family . He married V iolette Riopelle in 1958 and they had four children, two boys and two girls. V iolette died of cancer in 1982 and John married his present wife Delores in 1986. Prospectors live a hand-to-mouth existence, never having a steady pay check and never knowing where in Canada the next contract would take them. Because of his reputation for being straight, John was sought after by mining companies. Since many min - ing projects are secrets in their early stages, John’ s was known to keep his mouth shut and to put togethe r a crew that could be trusted if he couldn’ t do the job by himself. John read books about successful people and constantly asked himself “what made them succeed when so many others failed.” He also took night course on geology and other aspects of mining. He understood speed was important to reach a hot mining area after a fnd was announced so he became a pilot. He bought his frst plane in 1958 and owned one continuously until Sep - tember of 2001. He is a man of strong religious beliefs, He believes honesty in all endeavours and he believes in doing a full day’ s work for a full day’ s pay . John says about his career “you have to dream a dream but you must also work hard to make it happen.” He also says people cannot achieve important things by themselves. They must be part of a team and that is why John formed partnerships. He beli eves in positive thinki ng, say - ing he always expected to be success - ful. “If you keep doing things that are right, if you are honest, if you have patience and remain positive, you will be successful,” he says.
