Larche dropped out of school in Grade 7 and went to work in a bush camp with his father Jean Baptist Larche. John was big for his age and did a man’ s work at age 13. He began his mining career in 1945 when he got a job in a T immins gold mine and then spent fve years work - ing in various mines. He also worked in a uranium mine in the Northwest T erritories where he developed a life-long love of the open spaces of Canada. Larche got his prospector ’ s licence in 1955 and he set out to read everything he could about minerals and prospect - ing. He picked the brains of some of the many fulltime prospectors around T immins. His strong self-discipline, his stubborn determination to succeed, his willing - ness to go the extra mile at everything he did and his love of the outdoors proved to be the traits of the success - ful prospec - tor . Active in the Porcu - pine Branch of the Pros - pectors and De ve l ope rs Asso c i a t i o n , Larche be - came presi - dent in 1966 and served 15 straight one-year terms, He was also active in the Prospectors and Devel - opers As - so c i a t i o n of Canada and was a direc tor from 1967 to 1990 when he beca me an honourary di - rector . He served as president of the PDAC for one year in 1987. He served on many advisory commit - tees on mining for the provincial gov - ernment He freely gave of his time in order to further the cause of a healt hy min - ing industry and the well being of the prospector . In 1955, John teamed up with Alfred Rousseau, an experienced prospec - tor , and the men were partners for 25 years. Fred Rousseau was identical to John in many ways, closemouthed, honest and hard working. The discovery of the great Kidd Creek copper , zinc and silver mine in No - vember 1963 just 16 miles north of T immins was kept a secret until April 16, 1964 but Larche and Rousseau heard rumours and were staking hard that winter . So was Don McKinnon and when the news offcially broke in the media, the three men who had known each other for years joine d forces. Each made a fortune in the wildest staking rush in the history of Canada. What they had was an inventory of land that no one else could of fer . John would never tell anyone but Don said they each made about $900,000 from the claims they staked near - Cont’d from pg. 81 John Lar che with large or e sample in his fr ont yard in 2004 “The Porcupine Camp” 100 Y ears of Mining Page 82 Cont’d on pg. 83
