Page 20 Page 18 By Randy Salo If youre familiar with the Porcu pine Gold Camp then you have likely heard the old saying if you want good claims then you need to be north of the Destor This adage is rooted in the fact that most sig nifcant gold deposits in and around T immins are located within ten kilo metres north of the Destor Porcupine Fault Zone DPFZ There are few exceptions to this rule and one of them is Goldcorp s Night hawk Mine One surviving explanation Ive heard for the presence of Nighthawk Mine gold mineralization and associated deposits is the theory that during the genesis of the DPFZ faultin g origi nally broke westward and terminated under the waters of Nighthawk Lake Then after a hiatus of inactivity and upon the resur gence of geologi cal forces the DPFZ continued to break westward from a point north of its previous terminus resulting in the preexisting southwest trending Nighthawk Break and its consider ation as ancie nt DPFZ This is one of many theories and like any good theory it survives until it no longer fts the geological observations In considering the area along Highway 101 East from Nighthawk Lake to the Quebec border it is evident that sig nifcant gold deposits are located south of the DPFZ These include the past producing Ross Mine Kirkland Lake Gold s Hislop Pit McEwen Mining s Grey Fox deposit and V ictoria Gold Mine s Golden Arrow Pit It s no coin cidence that all of the above are locat ed in Hislop T ownship near the town of Matheson In easte rn Hislop the eastwest trend ing DPFZ turns southeast and main tains a curved trace through to Osisko s Garrison Project Also in this locale the 85o striking Arrow Fault transects and ofsets the DPFZ Here geological evidence supports that the Arrow Fault possesses a strong controlling structur al infuence in the areas of these gold deposits situated south of the DPFZ The addition of the Arrow Fault to government sponsored maps has been a cautious undertaking Its present ex tent from Michaud T ownship in the east to proximally north of V ictoria Gold Mine s Golden Arrow deposit in southwestern Hislop T ownship in the west has been as a result of consider able investigation due to very little outcrop exposure along its trace Geo physical surveying has been heavily relied upon Does the Arrow Fault continue west into Bowman T ownship and beyond Does the gold mineralization occur ring south of the DPFZ in the Shil lingtonMatheson area have a struc tural connecti on originatin g from the DPFZ Can the Arrow Fault be considered ancient DPFZ given its strike direction and origin in Michaud T ownship where the DPFZ curves southwest through MonetaPorcu pine s Golden Highway Project Many questions and few answers welcome to mining exploration The fact that none of us was here when all this geological acti vity oc curred means that as a minera l explo ration community we are continually searching for pieces of the geological puzzle so that we might better predict where to look for the next mineral de posit The entire process is a challe nge ac companied by risk and fnancial com mitment Mineral exploratio n com panies pick away slowly according to their theorie s and the truth reveals itself one drill hole at a time
