4 What is GEM W orks MiHR s Gender Equity in Mining W orks GEM W orks initiative is the only program that provides mining organizations with proven industrydeveloped tools to help eliminate systemic barriers to gender inclusion in the workplace It fosters a network of likeminded individuals and provide both women and men with the best opportunities to pursue rewarding careers in the Canadian mining industry The initial pilot delivery of GEM W orks was offered as a 12month program offering comprehensive training to guide companies along their journey towards gender equity and an optimized labour supply GEM W orks is now being offered in a membership mode GEM W orks Background Developed on the foundation of a 20142016 research initiative Strengthening Mining s T alent Alloy Exploring Gender Inclusion MiHR s GEM W orks program of fers comprehensive training to help establish Change Agents within an organization and ultimately eliminate unintentional barriers to gender inclusion found in dated policies procedures and practices V alidated through industry leading labour market research and funded through Employment and Social Development Canada s Sectoral Initiatives Program the driving intent of GEM W orks is to provide mining companies with tangible tools and training to increase the participation of women in the sector The product of a threeyear project GEM W orks received nearly 500000 in funding from the Government of Canada s Department of Status of W omen in 2015 as well as signifcant industry participation and commitment MiHR is indebted to the inaugural group of GEM W orks participants who helped develop deliver and evaluate various GEM W orks components Delivery of GEM W orks What is Involved i See Appendix 1 for full details on taskfor ce for mation r oles r esponsibilities and tasks Delivery of the GEM W orks pilot program began with comprehensive training provided to a cohort i of participating organizations that collaborated to learn from one another share successes challenges and of fer mutual support The cohort was facilitated and convened by MiHR and operated using the GEM W orks products This includes leaders from Agnico Eagle Mines Ltd DeBeers Inc Goldcorp Hatch Mosaic Inc T aseko s Gibralter Mine T eck Resources Inc V ale Inc
