16 T eck recently appointed its frst female General Manager at an operating mine on a permanent basis due in part to their inclusive talent management practices and policies Elaina W are General Manager at T eck s Greenhills Operations was identifed as a talent for accelerated development including T eck s Emerging Leadership Program which both enabled her selec tion and prepared her for success as a General Manager Meet T eck s BC Change Agents T wo Change Agents were selected from T eck s Human Resources group to implement the GEM W orks program Barry Billings and T anya McCarthy Both Change Agents successfully completed the GEM W orks Learn to Make a Dif ference training program consisting of four online elearning modules that explain the practical applications of the GEM W orks program Looking Through a Gender Lens Inclusive succession planning in a workplace where gender diversity is low can be challenging Personal connections and shared experience often infuence managers to search for people in posi tions akin to their own for succession planning which can make it unlikely for people who do not exist within a manager s network or department to be considered T eck is a large organization so managers are not always aware of everyone who may be suitable for a position Adopting and applying GEM W orks training of fered a new approach to reviewing succession planning and vacancy management practises opening the door for more inclusive policies and procedures for implementation companywide T eck Sees Results Prompted by their participation in GEM W orks Barry and T anya made several changes to the succession policy including increasing the number of vacancies posted internally They also implemented a practice to ensure managers consider all the women who reported to them and assess how prepared they are for promotion Managers are also required to request a gender balanced candidate list from recruiters to ensure that more women are represented in the talent pool and receive equal consideration for hiring and promotions Job applications received from women subsequently increased by 20 The modules wer e wellstr uctur ed and useful The frst one pr ovided data r esear ch and examples to help explain the business case thr ough infographics and other helpful snippets which is par ticularly valuable for Change Agents who ar e not HR specialists T anya McCar thy HR Business Par tner T alent Management T eck Resour ces Limited It became obvious that we needed to look at our succession management practices and inter nal r ecr uitment and selection policies to make sur e they wer e mor e inclusive Bar r y Billings Dir ector T alent Management T eck Resour ces Limited
