GENDER EQUITY IN MINING WORKS 13 T asekos Gender Challenge T aseko is a midsize Canadian mining company with headquarters in V ancouver T aseko operates the Gibraltar Mine the secondlargest open pit coppermolybdenum mine in Canada and has advanced projects elsewhere in British Columbia and in Arizona USA Gibraltar has a 22year mine life and employs just over 650 people Around 10 of the workforce are women T aseko joins GEM W orks In 2016 T aseko implemented the GEM W orks program and reviewed policies at its Gibraltar operations to identify where improvements could be made Implementation of the program was led by Gender Champion Robyn W est Superintendent Human Resources at T aseko and supported by senior management at the site Meet T aseko s Change Agent Creating an inclusive workplace requires the commitment and ef forts of more than one person At Gibraltar Robyn was joined by Change Agent Shayne Heintz Senior Coordinator T raining While Robyn acted as the heart and voice leading Gibraltar s gender equity ef forts Shayne acted as the hands He completed the GEM W orks Learn to Make a Dif ference training program four online learning modules for Change Agents explaining how to use the GEM W orks program Recr uitment is tough Ther e ar e a lot of women out ther e that ar e inter ested and have traits and abilities that would make them gr eat employees for us and the mor e we r emove the bar riers the better our own candidate pool becomes Robyn W est The GEM pr ogram with MiHR was str uctur ed ver y well and it r eally made us step back and think about the women we have in our workfor ce at Gibraltar W e have done a lot of work since to ensur e that our policies and pr ocedur es ar e not gender specifc Shayne Heintz T ASEKO GIBRAL T AR MINE BRITISH COLUMBIA CASE STUDY 4
