Table of Contents page 4 of 35 Foreword Mark R acho vides Pr esident The C or ona vius Pandemic now dominates the world It is a human crisis of our health and our societies The ec onom ic c onsequenc es c ome sec ond our people first T oda y mining f ac es f ar gr eater unc ertainties both ec o nomic and in terms of understanding as personal c onfine ment trade and tra v el r estrictions send our ultimate cus tomers ev en further apart fr om us So with climate change and other challenges also signalling a new epoch how can our industry r espond as part of humanity s r ec o v ery Because of the C or ona virus go v ernments ar e alr eady much mor e in v olv ed in industry in wa ys we c ould not ha v e for eseen ev en weeks ago Expectations and agendas ha v e also changed both in terms of financ e r egulation and en tir e supply and demand chains Both c onsumers and go v ernments incr easingly actually do want to change the wa y we liv e in r esponse to the pandemic and climate change T oda y s decision mak ers c ontexts terms of r efer enc e pri orities and language ha v e changed They want and fear dif fer ent things that r eflect a new c onsensus whether we lik e that or not and that is an opportunity not a thr eat State interv ention has bec ome normal and a r ecali bration of what we understand to be f air c ompetition is underwa y as we r espond to the new ec onomic unc er tainties In the E ur opean Union this is articulated toda y as the E ur opean Rec o v ery Plan and an Industrial Policy that will bec ome much mor e activ e both in shortening and str engthening supply chains and also r esponding to public c onc erns The E ur opean Gr een Deal r emains part of this we will change our ev eryda y beha viour In terms of mining ther e ar e at least two aspects to this change First the massiv e amount of our pr oducts r equir ed to en able the transition to gr eener energy and industry Sec ond is the r equir ement that we ourselv es change our business es to bec ome gr eener In 2019 The E ur opean institutions set the policy sc ene for the next fiv e y ears and established the foundations for fu tur e policy dev elopments with a horiz on of 2050 A t the heart of new C ommission s work is the need to addr ess the changes in climate technology and demograph y that ar e transforming our societies and wa y of life The new priorities of the new C ommission wer e sum marised as 1 A E ur opean Gr een Deal 2 An ec onom y that works for people 3 A E ur ope fit for the digital age 4 Pr omoting the E ur opean wa y of life 5 A str onger E ur ope in the world 6 A new push for E ur opean democracy
