Biodiv ersity The E ur opean mining sector activ ely supports the c onser vation of endanger ed species and habitats Thr oughout 2019 the E ur opean C ommission c ontinued work on r evis ing methodological guidanc e to carry out or r eview the as sessments r equir ed under Article 63 and 4 of the Habi tats Dir ectiv e 92 43EEC Such assessments ar e r equir ed wher e a pr oject or plan ma y giv e rise to significant effects upon a Natura 2000 site E ur omines pr o vided feedback on the draft pr oposals as r equir ed Also as the y ear pr o gr essed it became incr easingly clear that a new EU Biodi v ersity Strategy would be deliv er ed as part of the E ur ope an Gr een Deal With its international partners E ur omines also c ontributed to pr eparations for the next C onfer enc e of the Parties to the UN C on v ention on Biological Div ersity in 2020 Opportunities for mining pr ojects to enable Member States to meet EU leg al oblig ations to r estor e ec osystems or waterwa ys abound in E ur ope but such opportunities ar e missed if the Habitats Dir ectiv e and the E ur opean C ommission Guidanc e for minerals extraction ar e not c or r ectly applied W orking together stak eholders in a r egion can ensur e the balanc e of social and c onservation needs ar e c onsider ed and c obenefits ar e identified to addr ess longterm pr essur es on biodiv ersity E ur omines members ha v e suggested that EU funding of Member States Natura 2000 sites should be c onditional upon implementation of the C ommission s vision for c ompatible landuses and its various piec es of sector guidanc e e g nonenergy ex tractiv es ports aquacultur e windpower etc Table of Contents page 34 of 35 S ustainabi li ty and Competi ti veness
