Innovation As part of our commitment to support the Pr ovince of Ontario s goal to become a North America leader in new water technology OCW A is identifying and testing innovative technology solutions that enhance the pr oduction of safe clean drinking water have a positive impact on the envir onment and r educe energy use Over the past year OCW A has been conducting a pilot pr oject in Killaloe with SanEcoT ech to demonstrate the use of hydr ogen per oxide as an alter native to chlorine for secondary disinfection Hydr ogen per oxide is an ecofriendly option as it decomposes to molecules of water and oxygen without the cr eation of disinfection bypr oducts In 2012 OCW A initiated two pilot pr ojects to r educe the energy costs in conventional biological wastewater tr eatment At Ailsa Craig we ar e working with Ekologixs to test the performance of their Plunge Aer o Mixer to pr ovide fne bubble aeration which has been pr oven to pr ovide energy savings without the need for extensive plant r etr ofts OCW A has also been working with Bio Organic Catalyst Canada to test the ef fectiveness of their catalyst at impr oving oxygen transfer ef fciency at St Marys W astewater Plant Impr oved oxygen transfer will r educe energy consumption r educe gr eenhouse gas emissions and contribute to longer equipment life OCW A is keenly awar e of the challenges faced by small and r emote systems W e wer e pr oud to pr ovide a letter of support to United Nations University for their Hydr oSanitas Pr oject an interactive knowledge portal dedicated to pr oviding important information on tr eatment options for rural r emote and otherwise marginalized communities ar ound the world W e also pr ovided a letter of support to Global Spatial T echnology Solutions to demonstrate the application of micr osatellites in managing water r esour ces especially in locations wher e cost ef fective communications networks ar e not available 16 2012 Corporate Social Responsibility Report
