14 0 The f ollo wing are a f e w general rules co v ering special situations 1 If y ou tak e the wr ong r out e or suf f er a crippling injur y during y our tra v er se and do no t appear at y our pic k up sp o t d o n o t a tt emp t t o r e tr a c e y o u r st ep s u n l ess y o u ha v e ample time t o spare When the p ilo t realizes y ou are o v er due his fr st sear ch will be along y our planned r out e t o see if y ou are injured and ha v e lit a fre or made o ther signals If y ou are no t f ound a cre w will star t f ollo wing y our planned tra v er se on the gr ound while the helicop t er sear cher s anticipat e where y ou ma y be If y ou are of f y our r out e and can w alk go t o the most conspicuous point nearb y a ridge lak eshore riv er bar or meado w light a fre prepare a smok e or fare signal and w ait If y ou are using fares tr y t o opti mize placement so that the pilo t can be sure t o see them 2 If y ou are in the correct place and the helicopt er does no t come sta y where y ou are The h elico pt er ma y ha v e suf f ered a breakdo wn and it ma y tak e a f e w hour s or e v en se v eral da ys t o send a replacement Y our tra v er se is recor ded at cam p and e v er ything possible is being done t o bring y ou in Depending on the time of the breakdo wn a number of people ma y be scatt ered thr ough the area or be stranded with the helicopt er If y ou w ent out in the morning with ano ther per son and his tra v er se is close t o y our s y ou can tr y t o mee t up with him but if y ou are unsuccessful in this re turn at once t o y our o wn point Ne v er tr y t o w alk back t o cam p unless y ou are within 1 0 kilome tres of easy w alking kno w y our posi tion and r out e com ple t ely ha v e a map and are in good ph ysical condition If y ou do lea v e y our pick up point f or an y reason lea v e a pr ominent signal and a no t e indicating y our plans 3 If y ou are in v olv ed in an air craf t accident or breakdo wn f ollo w the pilo ts order s In abse nce of the pilo t the senior or most e xperienced per son is in charge An air craf t canno t alw a ys be spo tt ed easily in the w at er in thick timber or if co v ered with fresh sno w and conse q uently appr opriat e signals should be prepared If y our air craf t is close t o its fight plan r out e y ou should be f ound q uickly
