Page 39 Contd from pg 38 Page 39 epitaph for Jules T immins who died in Montreal on Feb 26 1971 Noah T immins was recognize d as the leader of a group of fve men who in vested their ener gies and resources in founding frst the LaRose silver mine in Cobalt and later the Hollinger gold mine in T immins Noah T immin s is unquestionably a founding father of this country s min ing industry While the T immins family and their associates were called businessmen they were really gamblers They bet huge sums unproven properties held great wealth They were often right but there were misses T immins spent his youth in Mattawa Ontario where his father operated a general store The T immins brothers Lewis Louis Henry b 1858 and Noah Anthony b 1867 inherited the store which serviced loca l miners and loggers They took a keen inter est in prospecting which prepared Noah for that September day in 1903 when blacksmi th and prospector Fred LaRose stopped by and showed him several rich ore samples from Long Lake renamed Cobalt in Northeast ern Ontario Noah asked his brother to track down LaRose and buy an interes t in the Long Lake claims LaRose had already sold 50 to his employers Duncan and John McMartin for 1500 When a dispute arose over the claims Noah T immins brought lawyer David Dunlap into the case to win for the syndicate LaRose then sold the last of his in terest in the claims gaining 35000 in total for the property Dunlap was given a 20 interest completing a fve man partnership of which Noah was the acknowledged leader When the LaRose shaft was sunk be low the surface mineralizat ion and into barren rock Noah followed the advice of Dr W illet G Miller and Professor Goodwin and continued work until high grade ore was en countered at about 100 feet The mine prospered and the T im mins brothers moved to Montreal and married the Pare sisters whose nephew Alphonse Pare was a mining engineering student In 1909 Pare informed his uncle Noah about a gold discovery made in The Porcupine by Benny Hollinger and his partner Alec Gillies On Noah s instructions Pare exam ined the Ontario property and report ed that it should be acquired Noah paid 330000 cash The McMartins and David Dunlap joined the T immins brothers after the init ial deal had been made the GilliesMiller property acquir ed and Hollinger Gold Mines was incorpo rated in 1910 the same year produc tion began Hollinger began develop ing its namesake mine which during its 58year life produced about 20 million ounces of gold from the prop erties assembled by the partnership the lar gest single Canadian gold mine for many decades The site was originally marked by a sign nailed to a tree reading T im mins and a community was born Noah s develo pment compa ny pur chased land for the town which through orderly design a registered townsite was able to avoid the chaos and problems experienced at Cobalt Noah again took the lead in seeking new opportunities In 1924 he pro vided 3 milli on for the building of Noranda s Horne smelter in Quebec He also provided development funds for the Siscoe mine in Quebec the San Antonio mine in Manitoba and the earl y gold mines in Y ellowknife NW T He also funded the Y oung Da vidson mine in Matachewan the Ross mine in Holtyre placer mine s in the Y ukon and a gold mine in Colombia Front Row James Murdoch and Noah T immins 1932 T wo workers on an electric locomotive trolley pulling an ore truck into the Hollinger Mine Porcupine Ontario before 1920 Library and Archives Canada P A17230
