People from all walks of life , includ - ing the Matachewan and T emagami First Nations, contractors and suppli - ers and top management of AuRico, travelled to the Matachewan mine site for a day of festivities. A video was prepared for public viewing showing the stories of those who pioneered the earlier mining ac - tivities in the Matachewan area after the discovery of gold in 1916. The original Y oung-Davidson Mine was in operation from 1934 to 1957. The historic portion was followed by cameos of team leaders responsible for construction of the current mod - ern mine. The video presents new exploration and cutting edge extraction techniques of today’ s mining with emphasis on working in partnership with local First Nations groups in an environ - mentally sensitive framework. On Aug. 1 1, 2012, AuRico Gold Inc. CEO Rene Marion (now retired) and Colin Benner , chairman of the board, and other dignitaries, cut the ribbon marking the opening of Ontario’ s newest comme rcially operati ng gold mine. The opening was signifcant because it launched the second 100 years of a Northern Ontario Gold Rush which started in T immins in 1908, reached Kirkland Lake in 191 1, and spread across Northeastern Ontario like wildfre. There never has been a year since 1910 when there were not gold mines in production in Northeastern Ontario.
