Ontario Clean W ater Agency 2012 Annual Report 19 Employee Satisfaction Employee engagement was a priority for OCW A in 2012 W e focused on impr oving our leadership practices and organizational communication and pr oviding opportunities for car eer advancement W e also worked to r educe performance barriers identifed by employees such as heavy workloads multiple layers of appr oval and str ess and anxiety at work As part of this initiative EMT and appr oximately 40 managers acr oss the Agency participated in the FranklinCovey Company s leadership development pr ogram called Leading at the Speed of T rust This pr ogram is helping the Agency impr ove leadership behaviour open communication and meeting pr oductivity OCW A has established an employee engagement action plan and pr ovides quarterly pr ogr ess updates on implementation of the plan to all staf f The ef forts appear to be paying of f as a r ecent engagement survey conducted by T owers W atson found 93 of our employees feel engaged at work Responding to Ontario s W ater Needs Supporting the W ater and W astewater needs of First Nations Communities OCW A has a longstanding r elationship with First Nations pr ofessionals for the delivery of water and wastewater operational technical and engineering services W e work with First Nations operators to optimize their systems pr ovide training and tr oubleshooting support and help their operators obtain and enhance their certifcation Pr epar ed to Respond to Pr ovincial W ater and W astewater Emergencies OCW A is very pr oud of the fact that we have fve emergency r esponse teams that ar e available to pr ovide emergency r esponse services to the Pr ovince of Ontario in the event of a drinking water or wastewater emergency The teams r eceive continuous and extensive training with specialized equipment including participation in fullscale emergency exer cises to ensur e that they ar e pr epar ed to r espond when r equir ed In June 2012 we assisted the City of Thunder Bay to r emediate their wastewater tr eatment plant which was damaged by the heavy rain Our r esponse teams also completed a number of exer cises thr oughout the year including setting up a water supply system at the 2012 Inter national Plowing Match in the Region of W aterloo Corporate Social Responsibility CSR As an Agency of the MOE envir onmental pr otection and public health ar e part of our cultur e W e r ecognize that our activities both as individuals and as a corporation have social envir onmental and economic impacts and actively support the communities wher e we live and work OCW A s CSR team is made up of employees fr om acr oss the Agency The team has identifed fve key focus ar eas each of which is supported by specifc actionable initiatives Community Support including V olunteering Education and A war eness Envir onmental Sustainability Employee Engagement and Innovation In 2012 we established a CSR strategy and plan including a scor ecar d The majority of the measur es set wer e achieved with onethir d exceeding the target OCW A s community involvement initiatives included raising 49263 for the Global Medic Dr op in the Bucket Campaign and 44675 in support of local charities and events as well as a 235 incr ease in the number of community events OCW A employees also volunteer ed 1500 hours towar ds OCW A charity and community events Educating childr en on the water tr eatment pr ocess water issues and the importance of water as a r esour ce is another one of our goals W e made pr esentations to thousands of childr en who visited water festivals deliver ed talks to schools acr oss the pr ovince and pr ovided a number of plant tours W e also pr omoted car eers in water by attending car eer fairs of fering scholarships and hosting students for T ake Our Kids to W ork Day W e r educed paper consumption at our head of fce by 246 and implemented ecofriendly options in our corporate of fce move r ecycled paint and carpet cork fooring V arious hubs within the communities also participated in tr ee planting events to help r eplenish our for ests Please see our Corporate Social Responsibility Report for mor e details on our activities httpwww ocwacomensocialr esponsibility
