S ec t i o n 5 -P a g e8 May 2013 Pr oper Grade Plates - Thin or weak plates will deform at low bolt tension. The bolt could also rip thr ough the plate during installation or by bolt loading. Plates should meet ASTM F432 standar ds. Perpendicular Installation - Bolts should be installed as near perpendicular to the r ock surface as possible. Bolts not perpendicular to the plate and r ock surface will be mar ginally weaker and will not be pr etensioned pr operly . Spherical seat washers ar e available to corr ect for angularity . Har dened Steel W ashers - Har dened steel washers should be used between the for ged head or nut and the plate washer . The washer r educes friction and enhances tensioning in thr eaded r ebar . Minimum grade should be ASTM F436 T ype 1or 2 and hole size in plate washer should be no mor e than 3 / 8 " diameter lar ger than bolt size if a spherical seat washer is not used. Rock Bolt Dollies - Installation dollies should only transfer r otational ener gy to the bolt during installation, not per cussive ener gy when drills ar e used to r otate the bolt. The shank end of the dollie must be short enough to avoid contact with the drill piston in stopers and jacklegs. T ypically , these r ock bolt dollies have a 7 / 8 " hex shank and ar e only 3" long. Besides being the pr oper size for the r ock bolt head or nut, the dolly must also have suf fcient socket depth to allow nuts to be run onto the thr eaded portion of the bolt. Gloves - Gloves and eye wear should be wor n when handling r esin. Odour - Polystyr ene monomers in the r esin have a particularly noticeable smell. Pr operly installed bolts (i.e. pr operly set up r esin) will have no odour . The smell of styr ene under gr ound implies br oken cartridges at the work place or insuf fciently mixed r esin in the hole. Education - Pr oper education of mining personnel and supervisors is mandatory . Resin anchor ed bolts in particular r equir e skilled miners. As manpower tur nover is r elatively fr equent in bolting cr ews, education must be continuous. For get this and you waste money . Monitoring - Installation must be monitor ed to ensur e pr oper pr ocedur es and quality ar e maintained. Pull-test measur ements should be r outinely conducted on r esin anchor ed bolts. T or que measur ements can also be taken on thr eaded r ebar bolts and monitor ed for changes. T or que testing is best done by a cr ew supervisor (or dedicated technician) while visiting work ar eas during his r ounds. Packaging - V endors must package bolting pr oducts in an acceptable manner both for convenience of use as well as pr evention of damage to the pr oduct during shipping and handling. Particular car e must be paid to wrapping of the thr ead ends to pr event damage and corr osion. Resin cartridges must be r obust so as to not rip or tear during normal handling. Good packaging costs mor e but is worth the added cost by r educing wastage on site. Installation Quality Guidelines continued www .dsiundergr ound.com
